feat(magazine): detect continuation pages and suggest titles for untitled articles
"Page N" entries come from review stand-ins created after Approve saved only the visible page's regions. New core/magazine_untitled.py classifies untitled entries (continuation, article head, advert, picture page, contents, junk), proposes merges into the previous article with confidence and evidence (optional LLM check in the ambiguous band), and suggests titles (deterministic, optional validated and cached LLM titles). Exposed through derived GET /articles fields, GET /untitled, quality report, undoable merge-into-previous / accept-title routes, POST /titles/suggest and scripts/magazine_untitled.py (dry run by default, --apply backs up first). Merges mark audio_stale; no audio is deleted; real titles are never overwritten. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

## [Unreleased]
### Added
- **Untitled magazine entries ("Page 33") are explained, merged on request and given readable titles** (`core/magazine_untitled.py`, `scripts/magazine_untitled.py`). Root cause: the review screen creates a `Page N` stand-in for any page no article covers, and *Approve* without a toggled box saved only the visible page's regions, which cut multi-page features down to one page. On *c't KI Wissen 2026* this left 59 stand-ins, most of them continuation pages. A continuation detector scores each untitled entry against the article before it (lower-case/mid-sentence start, hyphenated break, the narration fusion rule, open ending, adjacent page, column width; a signed-off previous article or the page's own headline counts against). An optional local-LLM check runs only for ambiguous scores. Each proposal comes with a confidence and the evidence. Records whose title repeats the headline of the article they continue are proposed as well. Titles: a deterministic fallback (*Anzeige*, *Bildseite*, *Inhalt*, *Impressum*, *Editorial*, *Textfragment*, the page headline, or the first sentence cut to 8 words), plus optional validated and cached LLM titles in the magazine's language (`magazine_llm_titles`, `--no-llm`). Nothing changes silently. `GET /articles` gains derived `display_title`, `title_source`, `suggested_title`, `page_label`, `untitled_kind`, `merge_suggestion` and `audio_stale`, and `GET /untitled` plus `quality/report → untitled_articles` list everything. Changes happen only through the undoable `POST /articles/{id}/merge-into-previous` and `POST /articles/{id}/accept-title` (never over a real title), `POST /titles/suggest` (suggestion cache only), and the CLI's `--apply` (backup first). A merge keeps reading order, marks the article `audio_stale` (a fresh render clears it) and deletes no audio. See architecture/magazine-ingestion.md, "Untitled entries".
- **Distinct, deterministic face profile per character** (`core/face_profile.py`). The cast of one book looked like one family because most sheets name no facial feature and the image model then draws its default face. Each character now gets a compact `face:` clause (face shape, jaw, nose, eyes, brows, mouth, cheekbones, skin, hair colour and style, facial hair, age signs, a mark) in the Subject of every character prompt: traits the sheet states (German or English) are kept, the rest comes from species/age/gender/culture-filtered option pools, chosen so that the characters of a book are spread apart (greedy max-distance in creation order; adding characters never changes an existing profile; relatives named in `relationships` share a few traits). Owner override: a `visual_face` text on the sheet. On the real books 02/03 the mean pairwise face-descriptor distance goes from 0.09/0.04 to 0.91 (44/68 characters had no face trait at all). See `architecture/character-visual-identity.md`.
- **Dry run for faces:** `POST /api/character-face-preview {book}` lists every character's face profile (what came from the sheet, what was chosen) with a similarity matrix and before/after score; `POST /api/character-prompt-preview` also returns `face_clause`. Nothing is generated or saved.
- **Character info is translated to English before image prompts are built** (`core/prompt_translation.py`, `_english_prompt_inputs`). Free-text sheet fields (species, appearance, clothing, age, props, story-moment quote) and the book setting are translated in one batched, low-temperature call through the app's existing LLM, validated per field (non-empty, no error echo, length, names preserved, not still German), and cached in the new `prompt_translation_cache` table keyed by source hash, language, model and prompt version. Records and the displayed German text never change; species/age/dwarf/period checks now run on English. If the LLM is down or output is rejected the original text is used, a warning is logged, `prompt_translation.used_untranslated_text` is reported and generation continues. `PROMPT_TRANSLATION=off` disables it. New read-only dry run `POST /api/character-prompt-preview`. See architecture/character-visual-identity.md.

### Untitled entries ("Page 33") and continuation pages
**Purpose:** clean up contents/driving-mode entries that have no real title (`Page 33`, `Page 69` …). Most of them are continuation pages of the article before them that ended up as entries of their own. The others are advert pages, picture pages, or short text fragments.
**Why they exist:** the review screen creates such an entry when you open a page no article covers. A page loses its article when an article is approved on another page without any box being toggled: only the visible page's boxes were saved, so the other pages fell out of the article.
**What you get (nothing changes on its own):**
- Every entry now carries a **display title**. Real titles are shown unchanged. Placeholder titles show a suggestion instead: *Anzeige*, *Bildseite*, *Inhalt*, *Impressum*, *Editorial*, *Textfragment*, the page's own headline, or its first sentence (at most 8 words). The page number comes separately (`page_label`, e.g. "Seite 33") so the index can show it in smaller text.
- A **merge proposal** when an entry looks like the continuation of the previous article. Each proposal has a confidence (*high* ≥ 0.75, *medium* ≥ 0.5) and the evidence, for example "starts lower-case / mid-sentence", "previous text ends in a hyphenated word break", "adjacent page" or "previous article is signed off".
- `GET /api/magazine/{id}/untitled` lists all of them with counts. The quality report (`GET …/quality/report`) carries the same list as `untitled_articles`.
**Steps:**
1. Look at the proposals (`GET …/untitled`, or the dry run below).
2. Merge one: `POST /api/magazine/{id}/articles/{article}/merge-into-previous` with `{"into": "<proposed id>"}`. It can be undone with **Undo**.
3. Accept a title: `POST …/articles/{article}/accept-title` (optionally `{"title": "…"}`). An entry that already has a real title is refused, so titles you typed are never overwritten.
4. Optional, better titles from the local LLM: `POST …/titles/suggest` (background job). It only fills the suggestion cache (`title_suggestions.json`). Switch it off with the setting `magazine_llm_titles: false`.
5. Whole magazine from the command line: `python3 scripts/magazine_untitled.py <doc-id>` is a dry run that changes nothing. Add `--apply` to write: a backup `articles.backup-untitled-<time>.json` comes first, then every proposal ≥ `--min-confidence` (default 0.75) is merged in page order and suggested titles go into placeholder titles. `--no-llm` keeps it fully deterministic.
**Expected result:** continuation pages become part of their article (pages and regions in reading order), and the index shows readable names with the page number beside them.
**After a merge:** the merged article is marked `audio_stale` ("render the audio again"). Its old MP3 still plays the shorter text until you render it again, and a fresh render clears the mark. The merged-away entry's MP3 and timings stay on disk and are not deleted. An approved article stays approved only if both parts were approved.
**Errors:** "The proposal changed" (409) means the articles changed since the list was loaded, so reload and look again. "No merge is proposed" (409) means the entry is not a continuation by the current rules. If the LLM is unreachable, the run says so once and uses the deterministic titles.
**Mobile / accessibility:** data only (API fields). The index shows `display_title` with `page_label` in smaller text, and the full title stays available to screen readers.
**Offline / privacy:** the heuristics run locally. LLM titles use only the LLM configured in Settings and send it at most 1,500 characters of the entry's text.

## Untitled entries: continuation pages and suggested titles (2026-10-03)
### Why "Page N" entries exist
Ingestion itself never writes a `Page N` title: `group_articles` titles an article from a
contents entry or a headline, and `auto_link_pages` names new pieces after their headline. The
placeholder comes from the review UI. `magReviewPage(n)` (static/js/magazine.js) creates a
stand-in article titled `Page n` (`POST /articles`) whenever the reviewer opens a page that no
article covers, and *Approve* advances to the next page that way. A page becomes uncovered when an
article loses it: *Approve* PATCHes `blocks` with the ticked boxes, and when nothing was toggled
`selectedBlockIds()` falls back to the check boxes rendered for the visible page only, so the
article's `pages` shrink to that page (`PATCH` recomputes pages from blocks). On `c't KI Wissen
2026` this turned 16 multi-page features into one-page records (e.g. *Per KI von der Idee zum
Programm* went from pages 68–73 to 68) and produced 59 stand-ins, 45 of whose regions had belonged
to a real article in the 2026-09-28 relink backup. Each approved stand-in was then rendered as
its own MP3, which is why the driving-mode index lists `Page 69`, `Page 70` and so on. A stand-in on a
page with only pictures or an advert has no narratable text (`Page 33`, no audio). One that holds
only an image credit gives a 2-second MP3 (`Page 34`).
### Detection (`core/magazine_untitled.py`, pure, no I/O)
An entry is *untitled* when its title is empty or matches `Page \d+`/`Seite \d+`/`Untitled`.
Each untitled entry is classified into exactly one `kind`:
| kind | rule |
|---|---|
| `empty` | no region with text; `image_only` when the page has pictures |
| `advert` | `page_is_advertisement`, or only `ad` regions |
| `contents` / `imprint` / `editorial` | a leading heading reads *Inhalt*, *Impressum*, *Editorial* (or English equivalents) |
| `junk` | under 60 letters of narratable text, or only credits/page furniture (`looks_like_page_junk`) |
| `continuation` | merge suggestion with confidence ≥ 0.5 (below) |
| `article_head` | the first narratable region is a real headline (`looks_like_real_title`): a new article whose record lacks the title |
| `untitled_article` | everything else |
**Continuation (idea A).** The *previous entry* owns the closest narratable region before the
entry's first region, in (page, reading order), at most one non-advert page between them.
The score starts at 0.1 and is clamped to 0..1:
| signal | weight |
|---|---|
| entry text starts lower-case (`ihn. An vielen Ecken …`) | +0.45 |
| previous text ends in a hyphenated word break (`Trans-`) | +0.40 |
| the narration fusion rule `paragraph_continues` accepts the seam | +0.30 |
| previous text ends without terminal punctuation | +0.30 |
| adjacent page (or only advert pages between) | +0.15 |
| similar body column width (±20 %) | +0.05 |
| previous entry is signed off (`(hag) ct`, `_ARTICLE_END_RE`) | −0.60 |
| entry starts with its own headline | −0.50 |
A suggestion is made at ≥ 0.5 (`medium`), and from 0.75 it is `high`. An optional LLM check (local model through the
app's chat client, `{"continues": true|false}`, mocked in tests) is consulted only in the
ambiguous band 0.35–0.75 and moves the score by ±0.2. Titled records whose title repeats the
headline of the chain they continue (*Durchstarten, bis die KI-Blase platzt?* on page 53 after its
own head on page 48) are proposed too (`duplicate_title`), because they are the same truncation
seen from the other end.
**Titles (idea B).** `deterministic_title` returns, in order: a type label for recognised kinds
(*Anzeige*, *Bildseite*, *Inhalt*, *Impressum*, *Editorial*, *Leere Seite*; English labels for
English issues), else the first headline-like region (≤ 90 characters, real title), else the
first full sentence (a leading mid-sentence fragment is skipped) cut to 8 words with `…`. The page
number is **not** part of the title. The API returns it separately (`page_label`) so the index can
show it in smaller text. `llm_title` optionally asks the local model for a ≤ 8-word title in the
magazine's language with a strict *title only* prompt. The answer is validated (one line, 2–8 words,
≤ 70 characters, no prefixes or chatter, at least one content word from the text) and cached in
`<doc>/title_suggestions.json`, keyed by article id and a hash of its text plus the prompt version. On any failure
it falls back to the deterministic title. Setting `magazine_llm_titles: false` or `--no-llm`
switches the LLM off.
### Nothing changes silently
* `GET /articles` adds derived, unsaved fields: `display_title`, `title_source`
(`title` | `suggested` | `placeholder`), `suggested_title`, `suggested_title_source`
(`heading` | `sentence` | `type` | `llm`), `untitled_kind`, `first_page`, `page_label`,
`merge_suggestion` (`{into, into_title, confidence, level, evidence[]}`) and `audio_stale`.
* `GET /untitled` returns the full report (counts per kind, suggestions, evidence).
`GET /quality/report` attaches the same report live as `untitled_articles`.
* `POST /articles/{id}/merge-into-previous` (body `{into}` must match the current suggestion
target, otherwise 409) merges one entry, and Undo can reverse it.
`POST /articles/{id}/accept-title` writes the suggested (or given) title. It refuses with 409 when the
current title is not a placeholder. Titles that someone set are never overwritten.
* `POST /titles/suggest` runs the LLM title pass as a background job (cache only, titles unchanged).
* `scripts/magazine_untitled.py <doc-id|dir>` prints the dry run (default). `--apply` first
writes `articles.backup-untitled-<ts>.json`, then merges suggestions ≥ `--min-confidence`
(default 0.75) in page order and writes suggested titles into placeholder titles only.
**Merging** (`merge_entries`): the earlier entry keeps its id; the later entry's regions are
inserted in (page, reading order). Pages, pictures, `continued_to`/`continued_from` and
`merged_from` are united, and the later record is removed. The title is kept unless it is a placeholder and the later
entry has a real one. The status stays `approved` only when both were approved. The merged record
gets `audio_stale: true` with `audio_stale_reason`. Audio and timing files are **not** deleted
(the removed entry's MP3 stays on disk, orphaned). A successful render
(`_synthesize_article_audio_sync`) clears the flag.
### Known limitations
* The review-UI bug that creates the stand-ins (`selectedBlockIds` fallback) is in
`static/js/magazine.js` and is not fixed here. Until it is, new stand-ins can appear.
* Reading order across a page that holds two articles relies on the existing per-page order. A
wrong page order gives a wrong *previous entry*.
